Buttered Cabbage with raisins and chilli flakes for $1.55

I absolutely love this recipe. This dish has a little bit of everything. The veggies for the health conscious, the butter for the non-health conscious, raisins for the sweet tooth and chilli flakes for the lovers of hot and spicy. Give it a try!

This dish can comfortably serve 2-3 people as a side dish. Or one if you are really hungry or want to save it to pack with your lunch the next day.

What you will need:

  • 300 grams of cabbage
  • 1/4 cup of butter
  • 4 tablespoons of raisins
  • 1 teaspoon of chilli flakes

How to make:

Step 1: Slice cabbage in to thin strips.

Step 2: Throw butter into a pan on high. Once you get a nice butter layer on the pan, add the cabbage. Stir often.

Step 3: When butter is all melted, turn heat down to medium heat. Add raisins and chilli flakes.

Step 4: Take off heat and serve once you start to get a little browning/carmelization on the cabbage.

Cost breakdown:

  • The cabbage I bought was 0.69 cents a pound. I used 300 grams. The total cost for this dish would be around 0.46 cents.
  • The butter was $4.00 at the store. I used 1/4 a cup. The total cost for this dish would be around 0.50 cents.
  • The great value package of 12 oz of raisins cost $1.94 at the store. I used 4 tablespoons (or about 2 oz.). The total cost for this dish would be 0.32 cents.

The great value brand package of  1.5 oz of chilli flakes at the store was $2.44. I used 1 teaspoon. Total cost for this dish would be 0.27 cents.

This leads to a grand total of $1.55 for this dish.
